Shadow Only Light

Aka "Anti Light" - a great hack for rendering super fast soft shadows. Limitation is scenes need to be pretty small for best results. Increase map size if more detail is required. Remember - this is NOT a light source - but a "shadow map" creator. Hence, you will require an ambient or additional light to cast the light in the first place. Very nice work ! :)

Sun & Moon Calcuator Scene / script

Have you ever needed to put the sun in a scene to work out shadows at certain times of the year ? I certainly do. Sadly, this feature is sorely missed in Realsoft (Its built into most 3D applications) - So I pestered Frank, and he came up with this amazing script ! To make it work for your region, you will need your longitute and lattitude. To find this out - try this link. Top marks from me ! Many thanks Frank ! - Bernie B)

"Just put the r3d file in your layers directory and the js file in your scripting directory.

You need to load the SunMoonScene layer first then run the script. You can replace anything in the scene all you need is the Sun and the moon levels, the objects in these must be in the north position and level with the plane." Another hint - you can replace the spot light with a direction light for consistent shadows. - B)

Saturn

"Just stumbeled across a "project" I was working on ages ago, but that I abandoned as the timelimit on the demo went out. Now I've finally upgraded and looked at some old stuff I've played with. Put the file on the materials page if it's good enough.
I was just experimenting with a material to mimic the planet Saturn and it's rings. It will appear to be slightly volumetric, but it's only a very efficient fake (has problems though). Although I cannot remember all the ideas behind the maths I had at the time, I gave it a "nice" gui anyway, that also includes some tooltips. The file is complete with a simple animation setup. Delete the rotation choreograph, and the gas bands will still seem to be alive in a 400 frame animation. Use the cameras to explore the different parameters in the gui. The ring part is basically a modified paper material, to give illumination effects on the backside, and added some noise and fade.
Not perfect by any means, but could be useful for some. Problem areas: The (fake) "atmosphere" is way too thick for such a huge planet, but illustrates a nice idea. Atmospheric glow can be controlled (go to advanced editing mode), but the stretch onto the backside is not too convincing. However, the glow looks pretty good on mother earth, especially with that blue tint. It can also mimic a nonatmospheric planet, but the soft shadow style must be changed (included in gui).
File includes objects, materials and thumbnail only.
Hope someone can have some fun with it." by Karl R Pettersen

Ant

"Here is a simple project file that I was going to use for some lighting test. It's a bit awkward but a fully rigged ant on a sugar hill."

Wood Stove

The attached woodstove projectfile started as an experiment on sds and fillets but when I read your alarm call I decided to finnish it so you'd be able to add it to the model library on your website. Perhaps someone will have a use for it. This project file needs a warning, OGL shaded mode and many sds objects in one scene is not a good combination. RS3D becomes sluggish and each step of "undo" takes hours of calculation, when you're lucky. Most of the time the program will simply go down. Better use windows wireframe mode or remove objects before editing the stove.

by Frank Bueters

PS the metal shader is by Tim Borgman. CoxStove is a brandname btw of a (once) popular woodstove.
